Call for Proposals DEADLINE EXTENDED: January 21, 2024
ISLAA Writer in Residence Winter 2024
Submission period: December 14, 2023–January 14, 2024
ISLAA announces the call for proposals for its Winter 2024 Writer in Residence. The ISLAA Writer in Residence program offers the opportunity to conduct research over the course of six weeks, exploring rare materials and newly processed primary sources from our Library and Archives. We invite applications from students, faculty, and independent scholars and writers based anywhere in the world.
This winter, selected Writers in Residence will work remotely with a select collection of fully digitized 1970s films produced by the Buenos Aires-based arts organization Centro de Arte y Comunicación (CAYC) from the ISLAA Library and Archives. Residents will produce an essay based on the film collection, in alignment with their own research interests and expertise. Each selected participant will be awarded a $2,000 grant in recognition of these research and writing endeavors.
The application materials required include a research proposal, a CV, and a writing sample. Find out more about residency conditions and submission requirements here. A virtual CFP information session was held on Monday December 18, 2023 at 11 AM EST. See the recording below.

About the collection of CAYC films:
After an exhaustive process of restoration, digitization, and study of the original films in formats such as 16 mm, Betamax, and Umatic, ISLAA is pleased to present a collection of ten films drawn from CAYC’s institutional film production and held by the ISLAA Library and Archives. Dating to the late 1970s, these films are representative of the organization's engagement with systems art and of CAYC founder Jorge Glusberg’s internationalist agenda, documenting and disseminating the group's interdisciplinary and experimental art practices. This selection of films captures the collaborative nature of CAYC, showcasing its integration of art and communication technologies while also emphasizing its commitment to breaking down national artistic boundaries in order to foster a cross-cultural dialogue between contemporary practitioners from around the world.
Materials in this collection are in English and Spanish.
