Columbia University - ISLAA Colloquium "Between Art and Archive"
One of the defining characteristics of recent cultural production has been a marked rise in the prominence of archives as sites that both construct and challenge historical understanding. Created by institutions and individuals alike, archives serve as repositories and ordering systems for documents, records, and other artifacts. This conference explores how artists, curators, and scholars have defined, examined, and contested archival practices. In what ways have these figures dealt with questions of evidence, causality, and historical sequencing? What is the role of gaps in archives? What critical perspectives does this work bring to light regarding the archives’ role in shaping collective memory and knowledge formation? In utilizing archives, how do these figures relate to the various traditions of aesthetic education?
By examining archival (re)workings, this conference aims to further a dialogue at the intersection of theory and practice. It seeks to analyze how archives inform art and scholarship and consider archives’ potential as sites of reimagination and social change.
