In partnership with David Lamelas: The Machine
ISLAA welcomes Argentine philosopher Florencio Noceti for Time as Construct, a philosophical discussion presented in connection with David Lamelas: The Machine at Dia Chelsea, organized in partnership with ISLAA.
David Lamelas’s work invites us to consider whether our experiences are constructs and illusions. This question is especially pertinent to our perception of time. By presenting successive stills of a moving image simultaneously, or by using visual aids that prompt reflection on the psychological effects of repetition and framing, Lamelas challenges the idea of time as an absolute, independent dimension.
Drawing on recently published diagrams and manuscripts by the artist, ongoing discussions among curators, art historians, and researchers, and philosophical writings from David Hume to Gilles Deleuze, Noceti will explore Lamelas’s critique of time. By examining how the artist manipulates forms and images, the discussion will consider how time is constituted.
Florencio Noceti is an Argentine philosopher. He teaches epistemology at the University of Buenos Aires and co-directs an institute for experimentation in creative intelligence at Di Tella University. His research, lectures, and publications explore the intersection of philosophy and visual arts. His books include Qué podemos ver (2012), developed through conversations with experimental filmmaker Narcisa Hirsch, and Unclassifiable (2023), a reflection on the work of digital artist Andrés Reisinger.
